Retail sales up 0.8%

April 16, 2012

U.S. retail and food services sales for March — adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences but not for price changes, — were $411.1 billion, an increase of 0.8% from February and of 6.5% over March 2011, according to Census Bureau estimates. Total sales for the January through March 2012 period were up 6.4% from the same period a year ago.

Apparently due to the unusually mild winter throughout the United States, building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers sales were up 14.1% from March 2011. The only category of retail establishment showing declining sales in March from February were electronics and appliance stores, where sales were down 3.1%.
