Durable goods orders rise in May

New orders for manufactured durable goods in May increased 1.1% in May from April to $217.2 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau reported. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.4%. Led by aircraft and parts orders, transportation equipment enjoyed the largest increase, $1.7 billion or 2.7%. Excluding defense, new orders increased 0.7%. Nondefense new orders for capital goods in May increased 1.3%.

Shipments of manufactured durable goods increased 0.7%, while unfilled durable goods orders were virtually flat. Inventories of manufactured durable goods rose for the 28th time in the last 29 months, increasing 0.5%.
