Job claims at a five-year low

First-time claims for unemployment insurance plunged by 37,000 during the week ended Jan. 12 to a seasonally adjusted 335,000, according to advance figures from the U.S. Department of Labor. That’s the lowest level of initial job claims since the 318,000 claims recorded during the week ended Jan. 19, 2008. The four-week moving average was 359,250, a decrease of 6,750 from the previous week’s revised average.
