Housing permits up 4.6% in February

Permits authorized for future residential construction in February were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of 946,000 — up 4.6% from January and 33.8% above February 2012, according to initial estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau. Housing permits are at their highest level since June 2008. Permits were down in the Northeast but up in the other regions.
Housing starts were not as strong, rising 0.8% from January to a SAAR of 917,000 — the second-highest level since July 2008. Year over year, housing starts were up 27.7%. Starts were up in the Northeast and Midwest but down in the South and West.
