Factory orders rise 2.1%

New orders for manufactured goods in May increased $9.9 billion, or 2.1%, from April to $485.0 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau reported. Orders are now up in three of the last four months, and the May increase followed a 1.3% increase in April. Strong orders for aircraft were largely responsible. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.6%.
New orders for manufactured durable goods increased 3.7% to $231.2 billion, a slightly larger increase than the agency had reported in its advance estimates a week earlier. Durable goods orders also have risen in three of the last four months, and the April increase was of a similar scope at 3.6%.
